Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a decentralized movement focused on addressing racism, discrimination, and racial inequality, particularly police brutality and violence against Black people. It was founded in 2013 by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Ayọ Tometi after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin. The movement gained national attention after the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner in 2014. BLM advocates for policy changes related to Black liberation and criminal justice reform and has grown to include approximately 40 chapters in the U.S. and Canada.

The movement gained global prominence in 2020 following the murder of George Floyd, with millions participating in protests. Despite some being labeled violent, most BLM demonstrations have been peaceful.
